Another one from the Diageo Classic Malts range, the Oban 14 Years Old is a favourite of ours which can sometimes lack behind its mates in fame and glamour.
The distillery lies at the heart of this rather charming West Highland town, which has grown up around it, so much so that it's impossible to how it could now be expanded. That is perhaps a good thing since they character then can't be changed by growth and things will always stay as they should.
Oban only have two 'standard' expressions, this 14 years old and a Distiller's Edition finished in sherry casks.
The 14 years old is lovely with bags of complexity and smoke. Great value and great to just get started with more peaty smoky whiskys.
Nose: Fresh and clean with a salty tang; some fruit and whiffs of smoke.
Taste: Medium body, soft and mouth-coating; initially sweet but develops greater complexity with spice, orange, drifting smoke and dries as it evolves.
Finish: Is the salty tang imagined by associations? Only another glass can answer this conundrum!
